What Features Are Important For Home Accounting Software?
Most accounting software packages are far more complicated than most people need for the home. You don’t need to track packages. You don’t need to calculate PAYE for the employees. What you need is some simple home accounting software that does just what you need it to.
First, take some time to decide exactly what it is that you want your accounting package to do. Don’t rush this, rather make a list right now, perhaps with the rest of the family, and decide what money comes in and goes out of the house, who spends it, who earns it and so on.
Keep that list around for a month because you will no doubt think of more details as they happen, and it is important that you know exactly what is happening to your money. That will help you in two ways.
First, adding detail to your software package is something that you can’t avoid. You have to set up the accounts package correctly from the beginning, and it will take time. Knowing what ‘pots’ you need right from the off will help you to be motivated and solve the initial setup process that bit more efficiently.
Secondly you will be able to go shopping for the accounts package with more awareness of what you do and don’t need.
So you have your accounting package, exactly how is it going to help you? In two areas.
1) It will save you time, and in today’s pressured world that is very important. Most people are now really struggling to find the time to spend with their family, and the last thing that you want is to tell your kids that you are sorry; you can’t give them any quality time because you have to do some really interesting bookkeeping. They won’t understand, get all grumpy, fall out with their kid brother or sister, and you won’t get anything done anyway.
Imagine instead walking into the house after shopping, boot the computer up and add a couple of lines of information whilst you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Sorted!
2) Budgeting. We have considered so far the package as being an accounts package, but it is important to realise that much of the software also has a budget feature to help you to forecast your money and your savings.
To achieve all this of course you will have to spend the time, as I have mentioned, in the setup. But it is worth it, both in terms of time but also, perhaps most importantly, in saved money.
