Moving Trailer Rental: When is it a Good Option?

July 27th, 2010

Cheap moving trailer rentals are an option in a couple of different circumstances. It costs less to rent a trailer than it does to rent a truck, so many people try to make do with a smaller trailer to save money. If you can fit everything into the trailer, or you need to be able to drive your own vehicle, then trailer rental is the best option. If you’ve already rented a truck, there are a couple of situations where adding a trailer can be helpful. Often, it doesn’t save money but simply makes moving more convenient and protects items better.

One good example of a situation where renting a trailer could be a good idea is if you already rented a large truck and find you need more room. If the move is local and you can easily make another trip with the truck, then the trailer obviously isn’t necessary. But if you have to travel some distance with the truck, consider that you’ll be paying a set fee per mile. It might be easier to rent a trailer to haul behind a truck then to travel a long distance and then have to go back for another load. It may also be much less expensive to do it this way.

Another situation is the need to keep certain items separate. Moving rentals are a good option for someone who’s concerned about antiques or prized possessions being put in the same truck with other items that could potentially fall against the valuable items or somehow cause damage. Putting those types of items into a trailer and wrapping them carefully to protect them can give you more peace of mind that they’re going to arrive in one piece. Obviously, the items would need to be protected carefully with things like moving blankets and lots of cushioning in the boxes as they are packed, or they could potentially become damaged in a trailer just as easily as they could in a packed truck.
