The name of the show our group watched was called “Survivor: Nicaragua” and we watched season 21 episode 2.  The show is set on an island where 2 tribes are formed; in this case the old tribe and the young tribe.  Each team has 10 members, and at the end of every episode one group member from the losing team has to leave. The personal objective of the show is to stay on the island as long as possible; as the last person left wins 1 million dollars. In each episode the two tribes compete against each other in various challenges. The winning tribe gets some survival supplies or miscellaneous benefits whilst the losing tribe has to vote-off one of their members (to leave the island). Although there are 2 tribes in the show we decided to focus on the older tribe for this exercise, mainly due to our assumption that older (more experienced) individuals would have better/more efficient communication skills.

For most of the comments we had similar observations, although some people read into some situations different than others, or saw some incidents to be more crucial to the group than others did, we all recognized the roles of the different people within the group. However there were slight differences in how we thought these roles might affect the group dynamics as a whole. For example, there were more than one “leader” type in the tribe, and some people in our group saw a problem with this, while others didn’t think it was one of the main issues within the tribe. This led to some debate amongst ourselves. Further, some of the actions of the group members in the show were read differently, e.g. when Jill gives a clue to Marty about where he can find an immunity item, some people saw this as building trust/ being strategic, while others also saw it as her sucking up (a form of personal gain for later in the game).

In order to gain our impressions of the older tribe’s group dynamics we paid attention to how they interacted with each other on the show, furthermore because it was also possible to get a video of the individuals personally expressing their views about the other tribe members, their personal problems, etc., we were able to better understand their personalities and evaluate them. Moreover we also go to see an actual tribe meeting between the members of the group we were studying and thus we were able to truly asses their communication styles, their leadership potential, and further their group dynamics. However, although being a little less emotionally stable this very same woman led to the tribe becoming more of a unit, and less of a group of individuals. Why? Because she knew how to communicate with the tribe members and ultimately unify the team better despite her mental meltdown. Therefore it also just that although the team had prejudices on women, ultimately it was the very same woman who actually aided the team, and as communication increased, efficiency increased.

Furthermore another depiction of stereotypes was that the man were expected to do the hard labor whilst the women were expected to do the easier labor. The interesting thing about this stereotype was that it was completely expected and accepted by all the group members. This was shown in the first tribe meeting when the tribe members were distributing work; there was no dismay with how the work was divided. Moreover the same idea was displayed for older people in the tribe compared to younger people. Whilst the team was generally old the older people in the team were generally given more leadership like rule because it was assumed that the older they were the more experience they most likely had, because they have lived life longer. Generally however there was few discrimination within the actual tribe.

However there were also a few weaknesses, as can be seen that the group is only included the old people so the first weakness they have to face is the physical aspect, especially for a game that requires a lot of energy and strength as in the Survivor episode, moreover their opponents are the Youth Tribe whom have motivation and are full of energy. To adduce this point, we can see the game in the episode; for the first stage of the game, they needed to crawl and then find the ball in the straw, this work takes them a lot of energy, so that they acted quite lower than the Youth Tribe, most of them seemed to be very exhausted after finishing their work, but they still won the game because of the dexterity for the next stage of game. The second weakness of the team is they have more than 1 leader in the team, and some of the members do not want to share anything to other member. In the episode, the one who seems and deserves for the leader title is Jimmy J, he tried to talk with everyone in the team, and glue everyone together, talked with Holly when she had emotional problem, and encouraged her to restart the game, but there are some one that want to be a leader of the team, such as Jimmy T, he always talks as a leader for all situations and wanted everybody follow his idea, when Holly expressed her idea that she wanted to leave this game, he just talk “ I accept that” without thinking. In the team, a few members acted very quiet, they just worked and follow everyone, Jane is the typical member for this problem, she did not contribute her idea for any problem, just follow the team. These are some of their typical weaknesses, they have to face when they are formed to be a team, and they need to deal with the weaknesses in order to become the winners.

On the other hand, they are old but it does not mean that they do not have their own strengths. Firstly, their life experience can contribute a lot for the team; help them to solve the problems they face. Holly is the one who suffered bad mood after voting her closest partner off the island, then she did not want to continue the game anymore, she want teammates to hate her, so she took Dane’s Shoes out and put the sand into it, the reaction of team is different from what she thought, they forgive her and Jimmy T even encouraged her to continue the game, because they know that if they reacted illogically they could lose the union. Secondly, they are old so they always show that they respect to each other and trust to each other. In the first episode, when people discussed to build the shelter to live during the time they would live in the island, they always shared their opinion equally, and together found the best way to build the camp. The strength inside the team can make them be compared with the Youth Tribe, a can lead them to the win.

The Older tribe of Survivor has two big weaknesses that might influence the team. The first weakness is that there seems to be more than one person that could be the leader of the team. This may lead to competition in the team. And this competition is not good for the mood of the team, because competition in a group can lead to jealousy. And the other weakness of the team is that there are a few people who don’t say anything at all. They are just following the rest of the team. This is bad for the team, because then they can’t make any good decisions because not everyone’s opinion is represented in the decision they are making. We could also see this when they were building a new shelter for sleeping. Some of the team members had other opinions about how to build the shelter, but they just kept that to themselves and followed the leaders of the team. This is one of the main themes in survivor season 21.

We would advise the team to improve their performance through the following:

• Let the group decide which person is most suitable for the position of being the leader of the team
• Give two persons a position as a leader of the team, so they can coach the team together
• Let the team members vote about the decisions they make
• Give all the team members one by one a moment to share their opinion about a subject

The best strategy for the leader problem is that they just have to let the entire team vote on a person that is most suitable for the position of being the leader. And the members that also wanted to be the leader of the team just have to agree with that decision, because the team decided. And choosing two leaders is just not going to work out. And the best strategy for solving the problem of the people that just follow the rest of team is to give all the team members one by one a moment to share what their opinion is about a subject. In that way they can make a decision based on everyone’s opinion. All in all, it can be concluded that survivor is on of the most informative and exciting tv series regarding team development.
