I have studied music and instruments for the last ten years, I recently started teaching a music class in my local high school and I wanted an instrument that would help the students to learn. I’ve been working with independent musicians in the United Kingdom for a good while now. I myself used to be a musicians, I released several CDs and vinyl for both myself and other talent musicians over the course of a few years. I’ve also been on 17 different radio stations live, and my songs have been played on a lot more then that beside. Despite all that (And the fact that I’ve toured the UK on more then one occasion) I still look back and see I made a lot of mistakes. In this article I will look at my main mistake, and hopefully you can learn from it in your music career. After all, I’m all about the independent music advice.

Promoting My Music Differently.
Looking back, I wasted a lot of time on meaningless promotion. Lots of musicians do it, they go out looks for fans one by one, spending a lot of their time stuck in front of the computer screen. Adding Facebook and Myspace friends all day won’t do much for your music career, many of these people don’t do more then say “you’re doing good, keep it up” and then forget about you. While you should promote your music on Facebook, it’s often better to let people come to you then spending all your time going to them.
What I should have done instead, is focus on targeting people that can get me mass exposure for free. Networking with radio and venue DJs is one of the best thing you can do as a independent musician, as these are the people that can get your music heard all over.

Sometimes simply sending the DJs your music with a bit about yourself can be enough to get some radio play, but for the bigger DJs you should make the effort to talk tot hem if possible and keep a good relationship with them. It’s a good idea to create a mailing list with all the DJs that are playing your music, and mail them all whenever you’ve got a big new release out. If they will like it, they’ll instantly promote it.

That’s the main thing I’d do differently if I had to start music again, I hope you learnt something from that. Good luck in your career.

Well firstly I can safely say that I still pay for music so at least there are some who do, however I am struggling to find anyone I know personally who actually pays for music. I think this is quite sad really, as music is something which can really help to bring out great emotions in us as humans. Music can make you feel happy even when you are at your saddest of times and I feel that a person who has produced something like that deserves to get paid for their work.

It seems it is getting so bad these days that people are almost allergic to paying for music.

The other day when I was at work I was listening to a track on my ipod at lunchtime and a colleague comes in and notices the track I am listening too and says “hey, I have been searching for that track everywhere, where did you get it?”

I said well I just bought it from itunes, its out in the charts so it’s easily available, where have you been looking?

He said “the usual places, all the download sites”

So I told him well if it’s not on those sites for download for free why not just buy it for the $1 it costs!?

He looked at me like I was something that just fell off the moon and simply said he never pays for music. He then asked me if I could copy it to a usb and give it to him the next time he was in which was in a weeks time. I agreed but I certainly wasn’t going to do that for him, I hoped he would forget about it.

However, a week later he comes up to me and says “hey I really want that track do you have it??”. I told him I had forgot and he should just buy it if he really wants it. He shook his head and said he doesn’t pay for music but he said he would come round to my house after work to get the download despite the fact I lived a long way away from him and it wouldn’t probably cost him more then a dollar just to ride the bus.

In the end I just avoided him till he forgot about the whole thing, and I hope he did have to buy it instead of someone giving it to him for free. Its quite amazing that this guy would go to such long winded lengths just to save a dollar because he doesn’t think you should have to pay for music.

Scary thought is that a lot of his younger generation all seem to think the same!

Many people are familiar with the antics of the Griswold family from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation movie. This film is a regular holiday treat for many people and many families. It just isn’t Christmas without sitting down and watching this movie at least once. It rivals A Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life as a new holiday tradition. The movie features Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold. It is a bit of a slapstick comedy, with many funny situations involving Clark’s rivalry with the neighbors to have the brightest Christmas lights display and his relationships with his extended family members, including his hick cousin played by Randy Quaid.

One memorable scene has Clark Griswold and Cousin Eddie sharing some eggnog out of some very peculiar Moose Mugs. These are little glasses like brandy snifters, with a footed base, but they have a big moose face sticking off the front, and great big moose antlers sticking out on both sides. They are memorable to say the least. In fact, they have become a sought-after collector’s item. It used to be that only a few companies in Europe made this item, and they had to be custom-ordered. They were also quite expensive. Thankfully, some American company realized that this item was in demand, and so, 20 years after the movie was made, we now have the officially licensed Christmas Vacation Moose Mugs! There have been many rumors surrounding Ali Fedotowsky and her multiple boyfriends or fiancé’s. Today almost any home with a television set also has a DVD player, and many now have blu ray players as well.  Since the invention of the VHS, we no longer have to go to a movie theater to enjoy the best movies and now we can collect movies that we love and can watch over and over again.  Building a large collection of you and your family’s favorite movies isn’t as expensive as you might think and the best collections include a variety of different genres of movies.

No movie collection would be complete if it just focused on one genre.  Sure you might love horror movies but do you ever plan on watching them with a date or your family?  So have all of your favorites, including the horror movies if you like them but add some variety too.  Add a couple of family movies, a couple of comedies, some action-thrillers and maybe a Christmas DVD or two, it doesn’t really matter what you add just have some variety so that if you plan on watching your DVDs with other people, you will have some that people will actually want to enjoy with you.

One way to add some variety and make sure you have some DVDs that will appeal to lots of people will be to include some that sold a lot of tickets at the box office.  Movies like the Dark Knight, Harry Potter, Avatar, and Titanic all did very well.  Even if you aren’t a big fan of box office hits, there most likely is at least one or two that did well that you can add to your collection and pull out when visitors with different movie tastes than yours come.

Classics are a great way of adding variety to your collection and are essential because many of today’s movies have been inspired by them.  Just think of the most recent Disney’s A Christmas Carol DVD, this movie was inspired by the novel but also by the many adaptations on film that have been redone by the likes of Bill Murray and Patrick Stewart.  I’m not saying you should include this particular film.  But think of the classics, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Casablanca and you will find many of today’s movies trying to work to match the standards that these movies have set.

In the end, you want your DVD collection to include as many genres and types of movies.  A well diversified DVD collection will leave you with plenty of options to watch so on those nights you don’t feel like watching a comedy you have plenty of other options.

The best way to get started is to simply buy a Playstation Move bundle.  There are two of them on the market, the Starter bundle is for those that already have a PS3, and the Console bundle is for those that do not.  In these you’ll get a Move wand, Playstation Eye, and Sports Champions.  The console bundle will also include a 320GB PS3 console.  This is all you need to get started with Move!

If you’re looking to take things a bit further there are a lot of Move accessories that can be used.  At the core, you should add a Navigation Controller first.  This is the companion controller to the Wand, but you can also use a standard PS3 controller in its place.  Aside from that, any other accessories are just a matter of preference.  There are chargers that will keep your Move juiced, all sorts of guns and sports equipment that can be used, or even skins that will add a bit of flair to your move.  It’s important to remember when shopping for accessories that most of them are a waste of money.  Decide if your hard earned dollars are better spent on games than on fake tennis racket!

It really doesn’t take much to get started with Move.  I do recommend that you get the games that you want before going overboard on accessories.  Doing so will make sure that you have hours of fun, rather than some junk laying around to collect dust!  Move is going to be hard to find this holiday season, so shop early to make sure that you get yours!

With so many animated movies available to watch, how do you choose which one? Many people like to read reviews on movies to get an idea of what they will be seeing. Many parents want to be sure the movie is age-appropriate for their child. Here is a sampling of two popular animated movie reviews.

Ratatouille
This is a “G” rated film, meaning it should be okay for the younger ones to see it. It comes from Disney Pixar. This movie is from the creators of The Incredibles and Cars, which will give you an idea of the kind of animation and age group that this movie will appeal to. The story is about a rat that dreams big. This is not your average street rat. This rat lives in Paris and is a human chef at heart. He just can’t make his creations in a restaurant as the humans patrons would quickly run for the door at the sight of a rat cooking their food. So, Ratatouille befriends someone to use as his “hands”. He hides under his friends chefs hat and directs the human on what to add to each dish. This friendship is a main part of the movie. It is a unique movie with a wonderful blend of humor.

Cars
This movie became an instant classic. Another Disney Pixar winner. Lightning McQueen is a race car with a bit too much confidence. He ends up rolling out of the trailer that he is being transported in as he is off to his next race. Once he realizes this, he ends up getting lost in a small town that was forgotten by people when a large highway went through. He wreaks havoc upon this small town, so he must make amends before he is allowed to leave. By the time he finishes fixing the damage he has done, he has second thoughts about leaving this sleepy town. Meeting a snazzy female car has something to do with this. This film is rated for general audience, so the whole family can enjoy it, and its lessons, together.

Cajon drums are box-like percussion instruments which are widely used as an alternative to a drum set. It still has snare and bass sounds to it and is much easier to carry around. If you happen to belong in a band who loves to perform anywhere, the Cajon drum is a great addition to your musical instruments.

The Cajon drum is easily played so you don’t have to worry if you are still a beginner in playing a musical instrument. The player usually sits on top of the Cajon drum and taps with the use of bare hands the front side of the box.  The different areas around the front of the Cajon drum produce different sounds. The one at the center may give a bass sound and on the edges is the snare sound. Different techniques and manner of tapping can also create various beats. Plastic and metal brushes are even used instead of bare hands usually for acoustic music.

A regular Cajon box drum is made plainly of wood. All the five sides except the front have the same thickness of about half to three quarters of an inch. The front side is a lot thinner and opposite to it is a hole where the sound can come out. Some modern Cajon drums have fiber glass front and have snare strings and bells inside the box or underneath the front side to give a buzz sound. The early Cajon drums were just shipping crates from ports or dressers which are used by the Peruvian slaves for music. The slaves were prohibited from playing musical instruments by the Spanish colonizers during that time. And the use of the dressers and crates for creating music were easily disguised by sitting on top of them. It later became an important instrument for Cuban and Peruvian music.

The Cajon drum is widely used as an accompaniment to flamenco dances. But now, it is also used for unplugged jamming sessions and acoustic performances. With its easy way of playing, a lot more people are enjoying the Cajon drum whether for festive music or for soothing acoustic performances.

Most guitarists have dreams of playing flashy solos, but becoming a skilled lead guitarist takes a lot of practice. Here are some simple tips for developing your lead guitar playing skills.

1. Practice Scales Daily

You probably already know how important scale practices if you want to progress as a guitarist. But if you’re like many people, and have avoided practising scales because you think it’s boring, it’s time to change that habit. Being able to play scales fluently is vital for a lead guitarist, and they will help you memorize the guitar fretboard properly and improve your finger dexterity, as well as imparting more theoretical knowledge.

When practising scales, make sure you include all types of scales in your practice routine, and for best results, practice with a metronome to be sure that you’re playing in time.

2. Improve Your Picking Ability

To play rapid guitar solos, you need to develop your picking skills, so you can pick the individual notes very accurately and quickly. To develop this level of accuracy and speed, it actually helps to practice very slowly. This can be challenging to do if you’re impatient, but if you try to go too fast too soon, you’ll never develop the level of accuracy you need to be a really good lead player.
