The Importance of Choosing the Correct Music Stand and Piano Movers
Every musician needs a music stand at some time during their career, whether it is when they begin learning, practicing, when performing, conducting or just playing for their own enjoyment. This is an apparatus that holds sheet music allowing the musician to follow it while playing.
There are several different types of music stands; folding (making the stand more easily portable), table top (can set on a desk), conductor (many have pull out sides giving the ability to hold several sheets of music, and height adjustable upwards to over 64”), standard (usually just height adjustable but not fold-up), clip on (can be attached to microphones or some instruments), and the built in stands such as on pianos. These can vary from the very simple plastic table top models to the elaborately ornate wooden ones which tend to be quite a bit more expensive. There are even some digital stands that automatic turn the pages. The small, clip on stands are usually for marching bands and musical performers on stage. But the most popular ones are the metal ones that are folding because of simplicity in moving it about.
Most music stands are adjustable in height, some also tilt. They all have a level area at the bottom in order to hold the music. Some have solid backs and others are open and decorative. They can be made of steel (more solid), aluminum (lightweight), plastic (usually in the table top versions) and wood (tend to be more decorative). The prices can vary from under $30 to over $100. All the music stands, other than the clip-on, table top and piano attached, tend to have tripod-type legs.
When playing the piano, as stated above, the music stand is usually attached. As with most stands, you’ll need to have good lighting while playing. There are several variations of piano lamps to be found and in many different materials. There are clip on lamps (these are also good on the portable music stands), free-standing (like a desk top lamp), floor lamp (these are often height adjustable and can swivel enabling the user to place the light in a way so as not to have a reflective glare), a counter balance lamp (these also are usually desk top lamps that swivel and can be adjustable), or the Led light (have shades to completely remove the reflective glare that are associated with other lights). Any of these variations should be chosen to fit with how the lamp will be used and also with the decor of the room in which it will reside.
When choosing the music stand and piano lamp to purchase, consider how you will be using them, for instance, do you need a portable stand or will a stationary stand suffice. If a budding musician is comfortable with the stand and has it adjusted just right, it might mean the beginning or end of a possible love of music!
