This issue has tow sides to the story – household and industrial packaging waste. At home and in a small office for a business whose scope is outside the packaging industry, all steps necessary may be summarized in as little as – buy less stuff. Or buy in bulk to avoid single and over-packaging. While a complete obstinacy from grocery and department store visits is almost impossible, a certain amount of shopping limitations could be rather viable to limit the amount of packaging in the waste stream. Also, a trip to the store, as opposed to ordering online, might mean that a piece of merchandise can be picked up in a more “raw” way as opposed to items which have to be wrapped and packed when purchased on the Internet.

Within the scope of an enterprise, reducing the amount of packaging in the waste stream might be done by enforcing better policies and a bit more proactive management. There might also be some financial incentives by industries and maybe by federal or local programs geared at reducing packaging and other hard and bulky waste. In Europe for example, there are separate dumpsters which are labeled “Packaging” so any style of plastic, metal, foil, polystyrene or large cardboard boxes can be disposed of there.

Panama is the narrowest part of the American Continent, so it is not a surprise that the Canal that connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean, was built there.  The country is very small, but being so small has a lot of advantages.  There is a point, where there are only 80 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and this is precisely where they built the Panama Canal.
Panama Central Mountain Chain is a continuation of Los Andes, but in Panama mountains are much smaller.  There are several points where the isthmus can be crossed from ocean to ocean, but in each of those places the traveler must go through the mountains.  Towns are located in either side (Pacific or Atlantic) leaving most of the mountains pristine and virtually unpopulated.
We decided to take a Panama tour through these mountains, staying a couple of nights in a park ranger station.  This was in the Kuna territory, on the way to the beautiful Kuna Yala archipelago.
The station had no electricity, nor running water.  But this place was not about the infrastructure, but about location.  We were literally in the middle of the jungle!
At night our group sat in the dark, just using headlamps, paying attention to the jungle’s sounds.  The howler monkeys were having a party of howls there.  We saw more than 10 tarantulas, one foot long grasshoppers, a roach so big that any of us could surf over it and a pair of red eyes looking at us from the nearby jungle.
Next morning we woke up wondering what else we were going to be able to observe.  Expectations were surpassed when a group of over 10 toucans came to feed from the seeds of the trees around us.  We saw an ant eater climbing a tree, feeding from all types of insects.  An armadillo came walking through the back yard of the station, so near to us that I think it was blind…
This was the ultimate, the definition of a real overseas adventure travel.  We totally recommend it!
