Fire Island – A Taste Of Odd And Familiar Tourist Spots

February 14th, 2012
Comments Off

Fire Island, New York has more than ten tourist spots packed in its narrow but long stretch of land. Situated just south of Long Island, tourists are often caught aback by the sight of dunes, forests, and exotic birds. All of them will bring you closer to nature but still leave you something familiar to remember by.

The all-too-familiar atmosphere of beaching can be seen in the beach communities of Fire Island, New York. As of today, the island has 17 of them. Some beaches are open to nudity – cases of topless bathing at most. There are also the typical crowded beaches, like Ocean Beach and Ocean Bay Park that have snack bars, restaurants, and hotels nearby to keep you company. Fire Island also has a few isolated beaches located far away from crowds and distraction. The different types of beaches in the island allow it to cater to different crowds – families, single people, and even gay travelers.

A little bit different to the beach-like atmosphere of Fire Island, New York is the Robert Moses State Park. It is one of the two places in the island where cars and taxis are allowed to drop passengers after crossing the bridge nearest them. It occupies more than 1,000 acres of the island and is reminiscent of traditional beaches only much more. In addition to beaches surrounded by typical establishments, there is also the Fire Island Lighthouse standing on the edge of the beach. It is a historical light house that’s been around since the 1850s and a great place to appreciate the Manhattan skyline from a different view. Smith Point County Park which is part of Smith Point West and not the national seashore resembles the feel of Robert Moses State Park minus the lighthouse.

Watch Hill and Sailors Haven are the best attractions for nature sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Watch Hill offers both beaching and camping opportunities. Its beaches are not crowded though, making it an authentic getaway. Watch Hill is dominantly a campground comprised of wild forests. Tourists who plan to be isolated from crowds should go here. Sailors Haven is mostly a wild forest although camping is not allowed here. It is where most of the famous Sunken Forest is located. In addition to the 300 year old forest, Sailors Haven also has untouched and isolated beaches.

The William Floyd Estate Park is a place in Fire Island, New York which combines refined culture and a lush forest. In the middle of the estate is a mansion and a tame, well-kept garden. It is surrounded by forests which you can freely explore with a guide. It is the most recently declared portion of the Fire Island National Seashore.

Examining The Costs of Backpacking Europe

February 12th, 2012

It’s one of the most exciting choices a young person can make – should I go backpacking and travel the world? And no destination is as popular for these sorts of trips as the magical continent that is Europe. There are so many wonderful countries and places to see in Europe, that’s it is difficult to actually see everything in only one trip. But a common theme and question among youngsters who are wanting to prepare for their European adventure is, “How much do I actually need to save to Backpack Europe?”. No-one wants to land in Europe and 2 weeks in realize they don’t have enough money to pay for their trip!

There are many ways to travel of course, you can stay in hotels and dine in the finest restaurants – but your money won’t go as far if you plan on doing this! The way I like to travel and backpack (and in my opinion how you have the most fun) is to stay in hostels, eat out at local cafes and restaurants (but not EVERY single night), and sometimes cook in the hostel to keep the budget going. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then let’s take a look at how much you will need to save to meet the backpacking Europe cost.

Generally, a hostel bed will cost you about $20 a night, sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less. Eating out will vary, you can get cheap eats for around $10 for a decent meal, and can go up from there. Remember to budget in museum tickets and other entrance fees, as well as considering the fact that bus tickets and train tickets will need to be paid for as well.

My last 2 month trip to Europe cost about $6,000 USD. This equates to around $100 a day, and backpacking can certainly be done much cheaper then this. If you are not including flights and your global rail ticket then $6,000 – $8,000 is a good amount to reach for a 2 month adventure. That amount will allow you to do quite a bit, and is certainly not ‘skimping’ it whilst backpacking. There are a number of resources and ways to travel a lot cheaper then this, but it’s a good figure in terms of savings to think about reaching before heading off on your adventure (you don’t HAVE to spend it all, right?).

If you are truly interested in travelling Europe cheap, then check out sites like CouchSurfing, Campin’ My Garden and use low cast air flight carriers such as EasyJet, RyanAir, Wizz Air and Transavia.

I’ve backpacked Europe a couple of times, and I run a website: ActiveBackpacker.com – swing by if you’re after more tips, guides and advice to help with your exciting trip!

Is Traveling in Belfast Safe?

February 9th, 2012
Comments Off

Belfast’s chaotic past continues to haunt the city even after many years of peace in the city. While tourists are pouring into the city, many still ask if traveling in Belfast is safe and thus it affects the tourism industry.

A brief glance at the past reveals the past conflicts experienced in Belfast for almost three decades on the grounds of religion. In what is known as the Troubles, a sectarian conflict arose between the Roman Catholics and Protestants in 1969 and lasted until late 1990s. The most dangerous episode of this conflict happened around the 1970s when rival paramilitary groups started assassinating people and bombing several public areas. This unrest brought Belfast into the news limelight around the world.

For some, it is hard to forget about what happened during the Troubles, but the previous decade saw a surge in Belfast’s tourism industry. It can only mean one thing, and that is Belfast is no longer the notorious city of Northern Ireland, but is now a peaceful and thriving tourism destination in the UK.

Traveling in Belfast is actually an remarkable experience and for many, it is worth going back to for vacation. The Belfast city center, home of the famous City Hall, Botanic Gardens, and the Crown Liquor Saloon, is a good place to take leisurely walks. With major buildings, attractions, restaurants, shopping centers and more within range, people can enjoy walking to just about any of these places and back without fear of any untoward incident.

In response to the city’s flourishing tourism industry, and thanks to its popular shipbuilding, tobacco and linen industries, the city was subdivided into five parts: the Belfast City Center, Cathedral Quarter, Queen’s Quarter, Gaeltacht Quarter, and the Titanic Quarter.

When taking evenings strolls or going to any evening events, you will observe that streets are usually pretty empty after 8PM. Old habits die hard as curfews were prevalent in the time of the Troubles. It is fairly safe to go out at night in Belfast, so don’t waste your evenings inside the hotel since the city buzzes with activity particularly in the peak months.

It is easy to get around the city, with a variety of transportation option to suit your needs and your budget. The Visitors Desk at the airport and the Belfast Welcome Center at 47 Donegall Place should help you with advice on the best ways to travel in Belfast. Prepare your itinerary to guide you in choosing the best transportation around the city and book your hotel in Northern Ireland.

Benefits Of Staying In Vacation Rentals

December 13th, 2011
Comments Off

There are several advantages of staying in vacation rentals while holidaying with friends and family or with your sweetheart. You can select from among various types of properties available as vacation rentals such as single-family homes, villas, apartments and even condominium units. These holiday accommodation units are an apt choice for weekend getaways as well as extended vacations and their strongest point is their affordable prices that are reasonably lower than other hospitality units such as hotels and resorts.

Additionally, these accommodation units are fully furnished and offer all the comforts of home as well as top line amenities that are available in a hotel. Therefore, you can cook your meals in the fully stocked kitchen at these rentals and soak in a hot tub bath after that for complete relaxation. Most of the popular island retreats around the world offer tourists the option of staying in tastefully decorated beach rentals that are located at a short walking distance from the beach and are equipped with a host of amenities such as computers with high-speed internet connection and flat screen television with cable connection and DVD player for entertainment.

Thus, you can simply stay in and make the most of your holiday, particularly if you are on your honeymoon. Beach rentals or vacation rentals in general offer more privacy than that offered by hotel rooms and truly give a feeling of being in a home away from home where you can make memories of a lifetime. Furthermore, vacation rentals are also a preferred accommodation option for travelers who like staying in a neighborhood where they can get a better insight into local cultures and customs of the place. By staying in a vacation rental, you can solve your problems of accommodation, dining and entertainment in a single stroke and enjoy a fabulous time holidaying on a budget.

3 Reasons To Stay Away From Timeshares Forever

November 11th, 2011
Comments Off

Do you want to buy a timeshare?  In the timeshare industry this seems to be a common problem, people are told that owning a timeshare will allow you to take a vacation of your lifetime every single year. However what they don’t tell you when the vacation is over and money is tight is how to get rid of it.  So in this article I’m going to give you 3 valid reasons why you do not want to own a timeshare.

Timeshares Are Not Real Property

First off, one of the biggest misconceptions most people make is that when you buy a timeshare is that you are actually buying a real piece of property.  The reality is that you do not own a piece of property but rather just a piece of time, one week a year to be exact.

Even more this piece of time you own with a timeshare does nothing to increase it’s value simply because it’s not like owning a piece of land that may grow in value over time.  When I bought my timeshare this is what my resort wanted me to believe and in the end it cost me big time.

More Sellers Than Buyers

Another problem with these timeshare scam companies is that they their are way more people looking to sell rather than buy.  In fact their a so many people who want to sell their timeshare that most people will try for years and to find a buyer.  I tried for nearly 5 years before I was able to get rid of mine.

The other problem that comes with this is that those that do sell their timeshare end up selling it for far less than what they bought it for.  In my case I bought mine for $5000 and was only able to get $400 when I sold it, and that’s actually fairly good considering some people will even end up giving them away just to rid themselves of it.

No Easy Way To Sell

Finally, when it comes down to it their is no easy way to sell your timeshare.  However, one place some people end up looking towards as a possible solution is timeshare resale companies.  These are companies that will list your timeshare on their website in order to sell.  The problem with these companies is that they charge very high fees to do this.  In fact I recently talked to a lady who almost fell for this scam.

To be honest their is no list of legitimate timeshare resale companies that want to sell your timeshare.  In my case I signed up for 2 of these companies and ended up spending $1100 to list my timeshare.  In over two years of being listed with these companies I didn’t get one offer, and when I called to see if I could get a refund I just got the run around.

Final Thoughts…

In the end I hope I’m painting  a clear enough picture for you.  Don’t buy a timeshare, it will cost you big.  By the time I was finally able to rid myself of my timeshare I had spent over $7000.  That’s a lot of waited money the could have been put to better use.

The River Hérault and the Canal du Midi at Cap d’Agde

November 9th, 2011
Comments Off

Water is a big feature at the southern French town of Cap d’Agde: not only does this modern beach resort border the Mediterranean sea, but it is also where the great River Hérault meets the sea and home to the final part of the Canal du Midi that links the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean.  Indeed this unique situation led to the development and prosperity of the city of Agde through the ages, and so it is no wonder that the present day resort makes much of this water-based heritage.

Exploring both the river and the canal is actually a really lovely way to learn more about Agde. Away from the seaside fun and relaxation on Cap d’Agde beaches, a leisurely stroll along the banks of the River Hérault takes you past some of the key historical buildings of Agde, such as the cathedral and down through to the fishing village of Grau d’Agde at the mouth of the river, giving you a really good sense of the importance of this key waterway.

Alternatively you can rent a bicycle and ride along the picturesque tree-lined footpaths along the Canal du Midi; or better still, hire a barge or join a touring boat for a relaxing couple of hours. One of the highlights of the canal here at Agde is the Round Lock, a cleverly designed feat of engineering that allows canal boats to completely turn around on themselves in order to access each of the three exits.

And, of course, where there is sea and fresh water, there is also plenty of fish and seafood! After a day exploring Cap d’Agde’s river and canal, you can pick any one of the many excellent fish restaurants here and enjoy the freshest ingredients, perhaps accompanied with one of the region’s fine wines. For Cap d’Agde hotels or holiday rentals visit the official tourist website.

Should you Choose Maenam Beach?

September 19th, 2011
Comments Off

Koh Samui is not a rapidly expanding holiday destination not because it’s not popular but because it has already reached a level of development that is more than adequate for most foreign visitors. It already has a number of big hospitals and supermarkets. It already has an airport, and it already has plenty of luxury hotels and private villas. Koh Samui has over 20 beach areas to choose from. Of those 20 odd beaches the most popular in descending order are: Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut and Maenam. So why choose Maenam?

The answer is that Maenam offers something different to Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut. Chaweng and Lamai have great beaches but they are both very busy beaches where sunbathers are often approached by Thais wanting to sell something. Moreover, both have a deserved reputation as being tacky. They have plenty of shops and restaurants for the tourists but they also have plenty of sex workers. The night life at Chaweng and Lamai is very much geared towards a certain type of single male tourist that probably alienates families and couples.

Bophut doesn’t have the same skin trade as Chaweng and Lamai but does have a reputation as being ‘boutique’. This is an ambiguous word but one of its meanings is ‘expensive’. For those looking for a comfortable bungalow on a quiet beach for about $20 a night the best choice is Maenam.

Maenam has the reputation as being the ‘backpacker’ center of Koh Samui. This is a bit unfair because you don’t see many backpackers in Maenam. What you do find are people who want good amenities and facilities and a quiet beach.

Maenam is a 7 km long stretch of white sand beach. There are lots of great value resorts along the beach and a few luxury places. There is extensive tree cover and it is easy to find a cottage or bungalow in Maenam along the beach with air-con, hot water and satellite TV for a bargain price.

The town of Maenam is easy to get to and has a useful pier for those wanting to catch boats to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. There are cheap restaurants, a few good bars and plenty of shops including a handy 7-11.

In short, Maenam has everything necessary for a fun and comfortable beach holiday, and at the same time it doesn’t have the infamous ‘bar beer’ scene and the inflated prices. These are the reasons why Maenam appeals to many people.

It seems to be the ideal time.Everything appears to be in place. You have just been granted the much pursued leave , your children are on their holiday, your wife has been pressing hard about being bored at home and you want to set yourself free from the rigors of your 9 to 5 routine. In comes the prospect of flying out to India’s beach capital of Goa, a place you have been planning to spend your holiday for a long time. However with no suitable time at your disposal you have always put it off.  However now with everything in place you don’t want to wish it away anymore.

However going to Goa does not mean you pack your bags and jump on one of the many available cheap flights to Goa to get to that holiday destination at express pace. One needs to do a bit of planning while entertaining the thought of going to Goa. When is your holiday planned? Is it a peak tourist season in Goa? Would you like to be in Goa during a peak season with more crowds or in the leaner period? Or would it not matter to you considering that Goa is at its best in December and January? Where in Goa do you wish to locate yourself? Would north Goa excite you or would you be more comfortable in the Southern tranquility of Goa?

Would you like some tours to Goa or would you prefer to adventure on your won? have you checked the available flights to Goa or are you planning to hop on whatever comes your way?  Have you planned about where to stay in Goa? What class of a hotel are you planning to stay in Goa? Would the 5 star hotels in Goa hold your fancy or would you prefer to splurge more on Goan food instead of accommodation?   Do you want to indulge in some shopping or is it purely an unwinding holiday to Goa? what are the bare minimals that you should carry with you while on a holiday to Goa?

The answer to all these questions lies in the well accepted fact that holidays to Goa like any other destination need some planning to be done and the best way to go about a holiday is to list out all the possible eventualities that can arise before , during and after your holiday.

When you have questions about your holiday before you, you are in a better position to tackle one by one. The better way to tackle would be to list out the points in order of  their occurrence and then jot down the  choices alongside and in a third column mark your final decisions.f Next act upon them one by one beginning with your hotel booking down till your arrival back to your  own residence.

If you have a tour operator you should inform him on all your concerns and get due assurances with respect to your queries before you land in Goa. You can also seek some direct info by doing some  The other some research on the internet which offers many answers on all the eventualities while on a holiday to Goa.

Things To Do In Argentina

September 9th, 2011
Comments Off

As a Latin country, Argentina has a culture with deep appreciation and respect for art. Like any country in the world, it is also proud of its food. And in its struggle to keep abreast with the growing modernity of the world, Argentina has also managed to attract investors who established large shopping centers without threatening the small shops of locals within its neighborhoods. All these make Argentina a great destination to shop, eat, and appreciate art.

Visiting all the cities of Argentina within a single trip is impossible under a budget. But if you would like to experience Argentina for what it truly is, you don’t really have to do this. All you have to do is explore the country’s capital city, Buenos Aires, and you will see tons of Argentina tourist attractions that will please your taste buds, sense of sight, and most importantly your budget. If you want to save money the most, you can go to places like Palermo Soho, Caminito, and Palermo Hollywood.

All of these places have small shops and theaters, galleries, pubs, and cheap restaurants that have the Argentinean touch right from their doorways. Here you can eat and dine on restaurants serving Argentine dishes which bear a remarkable similarity to European cuisines like Italian, French, and Spanish cooking. You can also go shopping at local art stores and shops there, set up by the locals themselves. Lively Tango music often fills the streets of these neighborhoods so you better be on your feet.

Tourists of Buenos Aires who are willing to splurge a little can go straight to Puerto Madero and Recoleta. Travel blogs will tell you these places have the most expensive restaurants and shopping malls. These places also have popular destinations like the Recoleta Cemetery, The Cultural Center of Recoleta, and River Plate. If you haven’t gotten enough of Argentine art yet, you can go to more specific destinations like the Colón Theatre to watch a performance, or the Malba Art Museum where you can enjoy going through its large collection of Latin American art.

Fishing and wool weaving, Azores Islands

August 23rd, 2011
Comments Off

Spinning and weaving wool are long established local crafts in Azores, and examples of local fabrics can be seen in museums. On an industrial scale, the manufacture of woollen cloth and knitwear continues today at Pringle’s Mill, and a mined woollen mill at Baligill. In 1792 David Dale of New Lanark together with George Dempster of Skibo built a cotton mill at Spinningdale. This fine stone building with Palladian windows in its stair tower was gutted by fire in 1806 and is now a dangerous ruin, but still very interesting.

Fishing is another occupation whose origins go back to prehistory. Small fishing boats could be drawn up on sandy beaches or in rivers, but, as boats got larger, the lack of safe harbours on many parts of the coast caused problems. Piers and harbours were built through the enterprise of merchants, landowners and organisations like the British Fisheries Society. Keiss is a fine example of such a fishing harbour, and there are many others on the east coast, including Dunbeath and Lybster.

Storehouses and icehouses are features of many harbours. The icehouses holding the ice collected in winter from shallow ponds, which were packed into boxes with the fish to keep them fresh in transit. White fishing still goes on, particularly from Kinlochbervie, where the boats come in at weekends, and herring fishing continues from Ullapool.

The history of salmon fishing is equally ancient but has left fewer traces. Salmon netting at Bonar Bridge may be watched from the road in the season. Before refrigeration, salmon were parboiled and salted down in barrels for sale at home or abroad (salmon were exported even in medieval times), and finally from the 19th century packed fresh in ice. There is a fine icehouse near Bonar Bridge, just before the railway. Such large icehouses connected with fishing are mostly mid or later 19th century in date.

There are two interesting groups of salmon processing stations in Sutherland, one inland at Invershin with a dwelling house, boiling house and two enormous icehouses set round a yard, and another on the coast at Rispond with pier, dwelling house and storehouse.

John Guild Inn, Hawaii

August 9th, 2011
Comments Off

When travelling around the world, you will find some amazing places to stay, and some of them will take your breath away. There are few such places in the Caribbean islands of San Andres y Providencia, and other on the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific Ocean.

In the lovely and fashionable Monoa Valley area near the University of Hawaii campus, a mansion has been restored, furnished with antiques and made a most elegant “bed and breakfast,” the first of its kind in Hawaii. In 1919, John Guild, a director of Alexander & Baldwin, one of Hawaii’s “Big Five” corporations, bought a, modest house on this site and converted it into a mansion. Mr. Guild achieved some notoriety in 1922 when he was jailed for embezzling $775,000 from his company.

The house fell on hard times in recent years and was used as a student rooming house. The building was scheduled for demolition in 1978, when it was bought by Rick Ralston, founder of Hawaii’s ubiquitous Crazy Shirts, and an avid antique collector. The mansion, now on the National Register of Historic Places, debuted as the John Guild Inn on Valentine’s Day, 1984.

There are six bedrooms, a suite and a small cottage. The bedrooms share baths. Guests are served fruit, juice, pastry and coffee or tea in the morning, wine and fruit and cheese in the afternoon. Peter Johnson, who owns a similarly restored inn in Newport, Rhode Island, is the capable manager.

A 1920s mansion today, John Guild once could see Waikiki Beach through the veranda doors, but now there is a view of the city’s skyline. Each bedroom is furnished differently, but in correct period style, and named after someone important in Hawaii’s business history. The exception: the (Frances) Beaumont Room was named after the silent movie star and nearly all its furnishings were hers. The charm of the inn can be seen in the first floor sitting room. Around the inn are a pump reed organ, an upright piano, a wind-up phonograph and a nickelodeon (the ancestor of the jukebox)—all in working order.

Better wedding experiences

July 30th, 2011
Comments Off

You know, for all the talk about having a dream wedding, I wonder how many people actually succeed at doing that.  It seems to me that so many weddings out there are exactly the same.  You know what I am talking about.  The two hundred people packed into the local church, listening to the same sermon and same expressions of love.  The local reception at a banquet hall where everyone has a choice between the well done circle of filet mignon or rubber chicken breast.  It seems to be the same band that is playing every single weekend and the same games that are done to entertain everyone.  If you are in your late twenties or early thirties and part of that group that is getting married, chances are that you are going through this process every weekend.

I think that is why so many couples today are looking at different options, such as destination weddings.  Choosing among honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean, sending out beach theme wedding invitations, these couples have learned to combine their wedding and their honeymoon and celebrate the best days of their lives at exotic locations with their closest friends and family.  This seems to be something that fits in more with what I have heard about peoples’ concepts of dream weddings.

The fact is also, with the recession that it is now cheaper than ever to do this type of event.  Resorts are cutting costs for everything and these deals are all inclusive.  This means that they take care of all the details from the planning to the catering to the drinks.  They will even put up your friends and family at a dramatically reduced rate.

I think that this is definitely the choice of smart couples today.  After all, why not do an event that you will love and save money in the process?

Have a Great Negril Vacation

July 23rd, 2011

South of Belfast city centre you find the most accessible suburbs. This area is also around Queen’ University where you will find many of the students living in rented accommodations. Around the Dublin Road area is where you will find most of the lively bars that are busy almost every night, but around the Botanic Avenue area is where you will find restaurants, cafes, small shops, and less traffic. In addition to Queens University you will also find in the south part of Belfast the Queens Film Theatre, which is the location for Belfast Film Festival that is held each year. After exploring the south part of Belfast, you can go to the north part of Belfast and visit the Belfast Zoo, which has a good variety of animals. One animal of particular interest at the zoo is the prairie dogs which have their tunnels extending throughout the zoo. Their tunnels make any open area looking like a big game of Whack-a-Rat. The only reason that they are running free throughout the zoo is that it was an accident. They keepers at the zoo had prevented them from digging out of the enclosure, but they did not realize that they had the ability to climb over their enclosure and run free. They also have the first Barbary lion cub to ever be born in Ireland at the zoo.

A visit to the north side of Belfast would not be complete without a visit to the Belfast Castle, which is more like a big stately home. It dates back to 1870, but was restored in 1988. Being situated on Cave Hill gives you a great view of the coast and the city of Belfast. Get yourself into a B&B Belfast city centre and see it all!

So you finally have that summer cruise vacation booked and you are happy because you scored a sweet deal. Be careful though not to fall into the cruise line trap of extra costs. So far you have only paid for your room, your food and a limited choice of drinks such as water, tea, coffee and juice plus a fair amount of onboard entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, cruise are the best vacation value around, you just have to be careful of the cost that can sneak up on you after you board. Tips, alcohol, cokes, souvenirs and excursions can all add up to more than the cruise itself if you aren’t careful. Below are a few tips to cut back on those cost.

First, cruises charge an arm ans a leg for excursions. Search the internet message boards for recommended private tour operators to save up to half off cruise prices. A good example of this can be seen with the popular Belize cave tubing excursion which typically runs about $100 on the ship. Reputable private operators run this same tour for around $50 and as a bonus you will be with a small group instead of a bus load of people.

If you are looking to pick up a few souvenirs wait til the ship puts them on sale. Every ship has a big t-shirt sale towards the end of the cruise where you can pick up some nice shirts for around $10. You can do even better than that if you wait to buy your shirts and knick-knacks on the islands where prices can be dirt cheap.

If you are a drinker your biggest onboard expense is going to be alcohol which can run from $5 a beer to $8 and above for all other drinks. This adds up over seven days so try to take advantage of the Captain’s cocktail party and art auctions where drinks are free. If none of those interest you then smuggling alcohol on a cruise has become almost a sport to some passengers as it can save them literally hundreds of dollars on a single cruise.
