Hippie Clothes: Pulling Fashion Statement of the Past to the Present
Hippie fashion started in the mid-1960s and at peak after the arrival of Woodstock where the people first saw, became attracted then adapted the fashion style of the group. Hippie era is all about groovy, independence, freedom from social restrictions, flamboyancy, flirty attitude, bold, bright, and other psychedelic innovations. Hippie fashion turned the world upside down and journeyed into another galaxy.
As once thought to be different and weird, hippie clothes became a mother to the fashion industry and is now being looked up to. The Go-Go boots that comes in different imaginable heights became a predecessor for the fashion boots today. Polo and turtle neck, which current designers include in their summer collection, also originated from the hippie era. Reversible coats that are made from fabric and tweed which is paired with suit or dress of the same material are from the 60s and is now dominant at this time line. Drain pipe pants became a source for inspiration for current straight jeans.
Design patterns of the 60s are now slowly coming back. There are sweaters that come out of the fashion market that uses fabrics with squares, zigzags, massive and small circles of black and white. The design appears 3 dimensional- a distinct style of the hippies.
The miniskirt also had blown its trumpet high. It was designed by Mary Quant in 1965 and was the reason for coming up with huge panty hose sales. Today, miniskirt plays a major role in women’s summer garment collection.
Movies makers nowadays also grasp the nature and style of the past and incorporate it to the modern movie concept. A few good examples are: “Austin Powers”, :The 60s”, and “Forest Gump”.
Hippie clothes represent anti-fashion and non conformant to modern trends because fashion tends to enslave hippies belief of freedom. Fashion industry is a capitalist propaganda for them that hypnotize people to buy the latest fashion trend which grabs then the freedom to choose. Yet, amidst their opposition, hippie influences are the one hypnotizing the current fashion industry without them knowing. Of course tie dye clothing would fall into the same category as hippie clothing.
