Simulated Diamonds: Romance On A Budget
Diamonds have become today’s most sought after gems not only because of clever marketing, but also because of the stone’s outstanding qualities. Everyone knows that diamonds are the hardest substance on earth, so nothing except another diamond can cut or scratch them. They don’t break and last really long so their beauty and brilliance can be marveled at from generation to generation. They have undergone such a long and harsh process of extreme heat and pressure that they have become virtually invincible. So that’s why diamonds last forever, or at least, as long as the earth itself exists. This is the reason diamonds are the standard to which all other substances are compared in hardness. The Mohs Hardness Scale rates diamond at a perfect hardness of 10, and all other substances fall below this rating. This aspect of the valuable stone cannot be paralleled by any other gem, not even by jade (6-6.7 Mohs), emerald (7.5 to 8 Mohs), or moissanite (9.25).
Diamond is not only hardest substance on earth but also arguably the most beautiful and valuable gemstone. It’s this priceless value that attracted scientists and businesses alike to replicate the extreme conditions in the formation of diamond. Finally–through extensive research and technological advancement–they have succeeded, and diamond can now be manufactured from a state-of-the-art laboratory. This new class of diamonds is called synthetic or lab diamonds. They have the same chemical composition as the naturally occurring diamonds since they are also made of pure carbon. They have the same hardness of 10 Mohs.
Simulated diamonds cost only a fraction of the price of mined diamonds and are thus ideal alternatives for engagement rings. There are little differences between simulated and natural diamonds, but these can only be tested in a certified laboratory. Non-gemologists like you and me would not know the difference and hence, we can still be awed by the beauty of this man-made jewel. The practicality of buying a simulated diamond is not its only advantage. Mined diamonds have sometimes been called blood diamonds, due to their use in financing terrorist and militant groups. Buying simulated diamonds affords us the beauty and perfection of a real diamond without the associated bloodshed. Through technology, every man can now afford to give his girl a “best friend” that lasts forever.
