Tan Accelerator Lotions

July 2nd, 2010

Tan accelerators come in different forms: gels, creams, lotions, sprays and even pills. Although the pills may be safe, they are not FDA approved so it would be wise to go with a topical accelerator unless checking with a doctor first. For the purpose of this article, we will assume using a topical accelerator lotion.

Tanning accelerators are lotions that can be rubbed on the body to enhance the process of tanning. However, they do not take the place of tanning. They are also not sunless tanning products although some do include dyes to expedite the appearance of tanner skin. They are usually applied to the body before tanning to reduce the time spent either in a tanning bed or in direct sunlight thus reducing the damaging effects of ultraviolet light rays on your skin. Results are usually seen within a few days but only last as long as the top layer of skin is intact. Once your body sheds the top layer of skin, the effect of the tan accelerator is gone.

The ingredients that cause tanning accelerator lotion to work are tyrosine and psoralen. Both are natural amino acids and therefore harmless to your body. Psoralen is extracted from citrus oils and other plant substances. It is also found in limes so you could achieve the same effect by rubbing limes all over your body but that would be sticky, require a lot of limes and leave you smelling like limeaid! Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid formed in the body from the essential amino acid phenylalanine. It is believed that both of these ingredients stimulate your body’s natural ability to produce melanin. Melanin is what causes your skin to darken.

Some tan accelerator lotions also include aloe vera and vitamin E. These two ingredients are included in good tan accelerators and are used to help keep skin moisturized and prevent wrinkles. It is important to understand that tan accelerators do not protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays such as skin cancer; they only reduce the amount of time needed to spend under ultraviolet light to achieve the same results. Use care and caution when tanning even with the use of tan accelerators.

There are a host of places to find great deals on a plethora of tanning products. Your local tanning salons and drug stores will have plenty to choose from. However to find the right product for your skin at ridiculously low prices you need to visit online tan accelerator store retailers. They will have your best selection and cheap prices to go with it.
