Barbeque Cooking with Charcoal Grills

July 9th, 2010

The great thing about BBQ is that anyone can bring out the grill and start cooking. All skill levels can be used to experiment on the grill to get a variety of wonderfully smoky flavours. While you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy your BBQ, it certainly helps to keep some basic tips in mind. With time and a bit of experience, you can adapt these helpful hints to get the most out of your next BBQ experience.

Charcoal grills have a tendency to get dirty after many uses so you want to make sure you clean them properly before and after each meal. This will ensure that your charcoal BBQ lasts longer, and will keep you from ingesting any unwanted remnants from your last BBQ. Grills should be scrubbed thoroughly with a slightly abrasive soap and depending on the material, you will want to wipe as hard as possible. And don’t neglect your utensils either. Make sure to wash them well and keep the ones that touch uncooked food well away from your primary cooking tools.

When you are ready to grill, you want to pour in the charcoals evenly and use lighter fluid as you see fit. Make sure the coals burn until they are light grey in colour before placing your food on the grill. You never want to start cooking while your coals are still flaming because there’s no way you’ll get evenly cooked food without burning it. And once you place your food on the grill, resist the temptation to poke or prod the meat. Many people make the mistake of constantly flipping their food, but this only results in a loss of juices and uneven cooking. It takes patience to produce great BBQ food and you have to trust that your grill will do its job properly. In time you will learn the timing necessary to have the best tasting food that your whole family can enjoy.
