About Panic Attack Symptoms
What are panic attacks? A panic attack literally, is a bout of intense and strong fear that engulfs a person all of a sudden without any prior warning. The intensity of this anxiety and fear is highly overwhelming, so much so that by the end of an attack, you would be left gasping for breath, exhausted with heart beating pounding wildly.
Generally, a panic attack strikes owing to an underlying anxiety disorder. Unlike other kinds of anxiety, a panic attack strikes very suddenly and out of the blue, and it is the suddenness of the attack that instills a part of the fear in you. So severe is a panic attack, that you lose complete control of your mind and body to an extent of disabling during the course of the attack.
Once a person suffers from a panic attack, say while in an elevator, or driving a vehicle, he or she will tend to develop a phobia and irrational fears relating to the particular activity and might even seek to avoid indulging in those activities in the future. The fears might intensify to the extent that the person might get too scared to even step out the house or drive a car.
Panic attacks can completely disrupt the normalcy in a person’s life completely. A panic attack can strike any body any time and in most cases if that person has been dealing with anxiety. A single panic attack does not mean that you are going to be prone to more in the future. It is only when the attacks become frequent, that the person is said to be suffering from Panic Disorder.
The panic attack symptoms include –
- The heart begins to beat fast and wildly
- Chest pains are a common feature in panic attacks
- You feel uneasy at the stomach
- You start to feel nauseous
- Breathing becomes difficult and often you get the feeling of someone smothering you
- Hands and legs start to go numb with a slight tingling sensation
- Hot flushes and feeling the chills are also extremely common
- You start to tremble and shiver
- You also start to hallucinate
- The worst symptom is the feeling of terror that grips you. You feel helpless as if there is no escape from the impending doom. The feeling of terror can be so gruesome, that some people think they are going to die and it is this fear of dying that sends the victim into an even more severe panic mode.
