Staying Healthy Can Be Tricky

July 9th, 2010

Staying healthy can be a tricky thing. In many instances it requires a bit of self-denial and discipline and getting back to a healthy state definitely requires these two. One of the first wake-up calls we get that things are not going quite as well as we think we are is generally a routine physical that has a blood work done and come back showing an elevated blood glucose level. Now one test that has these results is inconclusive, but when the follow-up test shows the same thing it’s going to take work to get back to a normal glucose level.

If these reading are slightly elevated the fact is that most people can return them to normal by exercise and diet modification. If they are way out of range treatment by a doctor is necessary and probably further testing to confirm or deny a diagnosis of diabetes. Even then changing diet and adding exercise to your day can contribute to better health.

Glucose is absorbed into the blood stream as part of digesting food and nourishing our bodies. Most parts of our bodies need glucose as fuel for the different muscle cells and we need to eat to produce that glucose. In response to eating insulin is released by the pancreas to its job of moving the glucose from the blood into the cells. Once the cells are full the rest of the glucose is stored as fat for future use as fuel. Most of us end up having to much fat and no future need for it.

When this process breaks down is when high blood glucose levels develop and if left untreated can result in other unpleasant health problems. Avoiding those is what diet modification and exercise is meant to do and get you back to normal glucose levels. Eat your fruits and vegetables like your mother told you to and get regular exercise of some type to turn this around. Denying yourself your former bad eating habits and disciplining yourself to exercise is the difficult part of the process.
