Treat Common Hair Loss With Hair Plugs

July 8th, 2010

Ever since 1950’s, men have been using hair plugs to treat the most common hair loss problem, male pattern baldness. However, this treatment is not viable for women because of the way women lose hair which is very different from men. Both men and women can be affected by a genetic condition known as Androgenic Alopecia which is the cause of balding and thinning of hair. Although a man and woman can be diagnosed to have the same condition, the effects are greatly dissimilar. If a man has Androgenic Alopecia, he will lose his hair on the top of his scalp or the forehead. Losing hair on the area of the forehead is commonly called a receding hairline and a man, with baldness genes, will start to loss hair on this part of the head until the condition develops further. Generally, most men do not experience hair loss on the side of their scalps or the back area. This is the reason why they still have areas on their head that can be utilized as donor sites.  The hair follicles from a donor site are removed from the scalp where its removal is unnoticeable. Then, these follicles are implanted into the balding area of the scalp. After the follicles manage to take root at their new location, hair replication continues to the part of the scalp where the hair wass lost.

Hair plugs for males is very effective because there is a donor site that can be utilized without showing any signs that hairs in that area were removed.  On the other hand, women have to go through the same condition in a very different way. They don’t lose all their hair in just a specific area of their heads. They experience hair thinning to the entire area of the scalp. There is no viable donor site where hair follicles can be removed. If hair follicles are removed in an area, that area will only appear worse. For this reason, the standard method of hair plugs that can be performed on men is ineffective for treating hair loss in women. That’s why it was a dream come true to develop a modern surgical process to create hair plugs for women.

The newly developed technique is called follicular unit extraction. Through this method, the body hairs are used as transplants into the scalp of a woman. The body hair has different texture from the scalp hair but they are good fillers so that the woman’s hair growth appears thicker. A woman can temporarily use a wig to hide her thinning hair until the hair grows back to its normal thickness.
