How to Make Voile Curtains

August 26th, 2010

Voile Curtains are ideal for filtering the sunlight as it enters your home, softening off the hard edges and allowing the room to be lit naturally without being overpowering. The good news is that making a voile curtain is fairly simple.

Start off by measuring the length of the window where you will be placing the rod to hang the drapes, and add two inches to this length for the rod to extend just past the window. Then measure the width of the window. You will then at least double the width of the window to decide on the width of your drapes, depending on how much pleating you desire.

An easy trick is to find a pattern that you like and buy it according to your measurements. Once you get it home, cut the voile curtain panels to match your measurements. Remember to cut two panels from the fabric, not one. Use a serger sewing machine to finish all the edges of both drapes so that they won’t become frayed later on in their life. Afterward, sew a quarter inch hem into the top, left, and right sides of each curtain. Then fold the top of each panel over to form an even larger hem. This should be large enough for your curtain rod to fit inside of it.

Hang the drapes by running the rod through them and installing the rod above the window. Measure how far you want the curtains to hang down, and pin the hem at this length. Take the curtains off the window, stitch the hem, removing the pins as you go so that they don’t damage the sewing machine, and then rehang the drapes. You can press the hem into place with an iron set on low to achieve the desired effect.

When you are finished your room should take on a much softer tone, and you’ll be glad that you decided to take on this relatively simple project.
