Popular Vintage Halloween Postcards

September 7th, 2010

Printed as early as the mid 1800s, vintage Halloween postcards not only make excellent gifts to collectors, but they are popular among non-collectors as well. While not common items, there are several ways to find vintage or antique Halloween postcards; one of the most popular being Ebay. But they are easy enough to find at most vintage and antique stores as well. Below are some examples of popular vintage postcards.

Antique Postcards

Like any other collectible, the older the postcards, the more popular they will be to collectors and this is especially true of antique Halloween postcards and other decorations. However, it is important to note that many collectors demand that the cards be in very good to mint condition, though many novice collectors are more concerned with the card’s age than its condition.

Signed Postcards

Many postcards, such as Clapsaddle and Brundage cards, are signed by the artists, which make them much more popular to collectors. These cards are often more expensive since they tend to be rare.

Written Postcards

Postcards that have writing on the back are very popular among collectors. Many times the cards are so old that the author’s dialect may have been different than what is commonly spoken today. Many of the older antique postcards were written with quill pens, which make them even more desirable. In some rare instances, collectors may find postcards that were written and passed on by individuals who were once famous.

Postcards with Witches

Witches have been associated with Halloween for centuries. According to legend, witches met twice a year during the changing of the seasons, once on April 30, then again on October 31st. Many popular Halloween antique postcards feature witches – witches in black hats, on brooms, or casting spells.

Postcards with Black Cats

Black cats are another Halloween tradition that have found their way on postcards over the years. Nowadays cats are just as much a part of Halloween folklore as witches, ghosts, and pumpkins.

Vintage Halloween postcards make excellent gifts, or can be displayed around the house to show off to guests. However, be sure verify the authenticity of the postcards when purchasing. One way to do so is to look for publisher marks on them.
