Ecofriendly Gardening- Be One with the Planet

July 8th, 2010

Today more than ever people need to be conscious of how they influence the environment. With climate change, pollution, and other consequences of human civilization, our planet is suffering. It is not difficult to maintain an environmentally friendly lifestyle. One can still enjoy life to the fullest. Gardening is a great hobby; it is also very easy to make small changes that will have a positive affect on the planet. Ecofriendly gardening is enjoyable, simple, and fun.

Power tools – such as lawn mowers and powered leaf sweepers – give off fumes that are as bad for the environment as they are for people. One way to reduce this is to garden the way our elders did, by hand. This may sound like a painful undertaking, however, it does have benefits. One will not be breathing in exhaust, or be exposed to deafening noise. It is also exercise; one will get a workout from digging, using a hand mower, or from trimming the edges by hand. The work will also be more precise, with more attention to detail. Working with the land, as opposed to working through it, will give a sense of peace with the planet. There are many power tools that are available as ‘hand powered’ versions such as the push lawn sweeper and push lawn mower.

Many people pour on chemical fertilizers or weed killers. The run off from these chemicals can seep into our water supply, contaminating lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. There are natural ways to fertilize plants and to protect them from pests. Natural fertilizer can be used. An example of this is worm casting, which can be purchased at local gardening stores. One can also use natural weed killers. Natural mulching, such as grass cuttings will help prevent and kill weeds. If pests are a problem, one can introduce natural predators to the garden or flowerbed. Ladybugs eat many of the problem insects that plague and destroy gardens.

One will be proud of a garden that is ecofriendly. It will produce just as well, if not better, than if chemicals or power tools were used. Be one with the planet by working in the garden the green way!
