Energy Savings of an LED Grow Light

July 21st, 2010

A wide variety of plants can be grown indoors, and grow lights can be used for plants that require a lot of light, medium amounts or very little light. A lot of folks give up on indoor plant growing though, because they end up paying more for light bills and are constantly buying new light bulbs. With LED lights, also known as light-emitting diode lighting, a person will not only be saving energy, but he or she will not have to purchase new bulbs as often.

Whether a person is growing indoor plants as a hobby, owns a greenhouse or needs to grow large amounts of plants that require continuous lighting, he or she will get the energy savings of an LED grow light that is out of this world. Statistics show that LED lights use at least 88% less energy than other types of artificial lighting fixtures. For example, if a person was to use a 45 Watt bulb in his or her LED system, that amount of lighting would be equivalent to a 400Watt bulb used in an HID grow light.

Additionally, these types of plant growing lights will not hinder the growth of herbs, vegetables, flowers and other kinds of indoor plant life. As a matter of fact, many folks have figured out just how wonderfully their indoor gardens can thrive with these lights. So, people are saving money on utility bills, giving their plants sufficient amounts of lighting and buying fewer light bulbs.

Original glass bulbs used for growing systems are replaced several times each year. That can cost a lot of money. The latest reports about LED bulbs are that the life expectancy for one bulb can be anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 hours, which means that light-emitting diode bulbs last at an average of 35 times longer than the older style bulbs do.
