Growing an Indoor Garden with LED Grow Lights

July 4th, 2010

Many gardeners love the idea of cultivating their own bit of earth so much that many have taken to using full spectrum LED grow lights to continue the growing cycle regardless of weather or season. While some only use the technology to grow flowers, many have become used to growing vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce or parsley year round. It’s not a bad idea; grocery stores ship often ship in inferior product for some vegetables in the local off season.

Growing a garden indoors has some significant nuances that differ from outdoor gardening, even when gardening in a greenhouse. Light positioning, something that’s less controllable outdoors, is a major factor in indoor gardening.

Positioning the lights closer to the plants naturally increases the growth, but not always in a desirable way. Generally the lights should be placed somewhere in the range of 12 to 24 inches from the growing plants.

Using blue or red lights in different situations; blue lights tend to produce stronger, heartier seedlings, but some crops require changing the type of light as they grow; it’s dependent on the type of plant. Blue lights can be used to help keep tomato plants from sprawling.

Some gardeners find that moving the lights and altering the light mixture gives them enough flexibility, but some like to create more options by devising movable plant racks to make sure they can really try as many different growing options as possible. This also allows for growing more types of crops in the same area at different times.

LED grow lights work best when used in a mixture between red and blue; although LEDs produce less light than HIDs, they actually can be used to create a better growing environment when used correctly; it’s important to learn more about the specific type of plant you are working with and of course, use the gardeners’ rule of experimentation to find what works best for you and your crop. When you experiment make sure to use the top LED grow lights available as they will provide you better and more consistent results more often than not.
