Unique Concepts For Walk In Shower Designs Without Doors

August 16th, 2010

Many clients who contract builders / plumbers to create shower designs without doors have similar concerns. The main question pertains to the size of the shower area that’s optimum so as to reduce the amount of water splashed onto the floor area outside the actual shower space. The answer is that the best shower size will be about 8 by 10, but that almost all walk in showers that don’t have doors will have some splashing. The key to a successful shower concept will depend on what the priorities are in having a shower without a door. Is it acceptable to have a mat outside the shower to minimize bathroom wetness? Is there enough space to adapt unique designs that will be both open and yet water free?

Here are the two suggestions for walk in showers concepts that do not have doors and offer maximum openness and dry floors:

1. an L shaped or U or V angled shower area is very effective for controlling splashing in bathrooms where you’d prefer the floor remained dry. Usually a larger space is essential to effectively create an L shaped design, but if there is a way to have the shower in an area that is around a corner, the surrounding walls will act as an enclosure, even if there is no door. Many clients love this design because the shower won’t get all steamed up due to the open space but yet there’s lots of privacy and floors outside the L are dry.

2. two panels of glass that are angled asymmetrically can create a doorway that is off center. If the showerhead is then positioned to one side more than another, the splash is controlled without closing off the space totally. Also curved panels, half walls made from glass blocks and rounded divider walls that leave a doorway off to one side, all work very well to maintain a dry room overall. Remember that the way in which the shower head is installed and how it’s angled will increase or diminish splashing. Install the showerhead on a wall that is not opposite the opening.
