Why Install an Awning Over Your Porch

July 29th, 2010

There is nothing like a quaint front porch on an older, more traditional home, complete with a few rockers or other interesting pieces of furniture.  The same goes for a back porch or even a side wraparound porch.  One way to really add usability, as well as an added aesthetic look to your porch, is to install a porch awning if you don’t already have one.  Many homes that have a porch attached to them may already have some type of overhead covering, but if not, there are benefits to installing one yourself (or hiring someone to install it for you).

An awning installed over your porch can make the whole space a lot more user friendly and comfortable.  For one, it protects the area from the sun so you can sit out there without worrying about getting a sunburn or being exposed to the damaging rays of the sun.  Since the awning blocks out the sun, it also makes it cooler to sit in the shaded area.

Another benefit is that you can leave furniture out there all year round that will remain in good shape because the furniture is not constantly exposed to the elements.  For example, there is nothing like the look of a few wicker rockers to relax in on a front porch, but you can also put cushioned furniture, such as a couch or loveseat, as well as a table or two and even a rug.  The nice thing is that everything can stay on the porch without you having to worry about it getting rained on or faded from the sun.

Another benefit to putting an awning over your porch is that the overhead covering creates a sense of privacy while you are outside enjoying the porch.  Although the covering is overhead and may not shield the sides of the space, it still provides a more intimate and private feel, making you feel less exposed to the neighbors all around.
