Hardships of Working as an Art Teacher

August 12th, 2010

Some people may look at being an art teacher as the easiest career because the only real task they have is teach students about art, art history and help them with drawing techniques that will essentially improve their work and projects. However, that claim is anything but true. Whether art teachers are teaching university and college students, providing them with important lectures and handing out difficult assignments to test their abilities or an elementary art teacher is showing first graders the importance of drawing and being creative, running a classroom effectively and efficiently is a very complicated challenge alone. Being handed a curriculum and having to turn that into lessons that are engaging and paying attention worthy can become a problem for those that think being an art teacher is all about easy work because a professional must be very creative in their planning to make everything work as planned and get everyone involved to the point where they want to succeed and follow through with that in work.

While this would not be a problem in college and most likely not in high school, dealing with elementary and secondary school students can sometimes be very hectic because of their desire to be mischievous and cause problems without any regard to the fact that they are doing something wrong and should refrain completely. Coping with this and dealing with it in an effective manner is more than likely close to impossible to handle perfectly the first time around because whereas adults can be talked to and calmed down, students sometimes get more and more angry as long as they are being told to stop and not continue what they are doing. Art teacher jobs are filled with new situations, new people, new goals and new challenges, while this may be amazing for those that like change and doing something different, some art teachers may find this very annoying and obnoxious to deal with. Overall, while there are definitely some hardships that must be endured while being an art teacher, generally, when combining the salary, benefits and the satisfaction of teaching students the positives far outweigh the negatives.
