Is Your Pooch Suffering From Food Allergies?
If your pet has an adverse reaction to a dog food, the dog food may not be low quality but simply include ingredients that your particular dog is allergic to. There are so many ingredients in some dog foods that if your pet has any dog food allergies they could easily end up with a reaction from an otherwise good product. Some pet food companies’ “hypoallergenic” dog foods contain modified proteins that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Your veterinarian is the best source of information about what you can do about any dog allergies your pet may have.
You may need to do some experimenting with the different hypoallergenic dry dog food products available if you don’t know the source of your dog’s allergic reaction. Many pet owners believe that combining rice and lamb is the best way to solve the problem of allergies that cause the dog’s skin to itch and break out. For example, some foods are totally organic, containing no preservatives that could be the source of the allergy symptoms. If that is not the issue, then testing your own combinations of natural foods that eliminate different ingredients may be the way to isolate the ingredient or ingredients that cause your pet problems. However, this is not feasible for some dog owners and many reputable dog food manufacturers have created a variety of hypoallergenic dog food products that you can use and that contain a more balanced diet.
The elimination process could result in depriving the dog of a balanced diet, especially if eliminating the offending ingredient results in a dietary deficiency. Once you know what your dog can and cannot eat, you can either prepare his food yourself from home-made ingredients–not a practical solution for most dog owners–or shop the various specialized hypoallergenic dog food products available. The selection is excellent and you should be able to find one to suit your pet. Note that it usually takes at least a month of eating a particular food to know for sure it does not contain any ingredients that could trigger your dog’s allergies.
