Koi Tycoon
When I was a little child, I always get excited coming home from school. It was because I get to feed my Japanese koi fish. I have about three baby koi fish of different koi types at that time. My hobby started when my uncle from Detroit came to visit us. With my parents’ permission, he built a medium sized koi pond in our garden and bought three koi fish. It was his gift for my tenth birthday.
When I was 13, my koi started to reproduce, because they produce too many babies, we make sure that we either sell or give the little ones to our friends because my uncle said that if I don’t do it, all of my fish will die due to overpopulation. I saved the money I earned while selling the little fish. So, at the age of 15, I decided to put a new pond in our backyard. My dad disapproved my idea in the beginning because he said that it would eat up a lot of our backyard space. I convinced him that if we put up another koi pond, we could breed more fish and we can sell more. Eventually he said yes. So he helped me around the building process along with a professional. After a month of hard work the new pond was finally completed. On the side, we decided to put up a breeding tank and a tank for newly hatched eggs.
In the beginning, it was hard for me to take care of the pond. This was because I was still in school. My dad made me promised to do well in school, and if I fail even a single test, he surely would give away all of my fish. So I made a schedule just to keep me guided with my daily tasks.
Now that I am 22 years old, I have my very own koi center but still finishing up my college education. I am happy that my business has grown and that I get to help my parents financially. Maybe few years from now, I’ll be the youngest koi tycoon.
