Use Natural Repellents For Fleas With Caution

July 21st, 2010

Fleas are not only annoying to a dog, they can also increase health risks. Dogs who frequently scratch can infect their skin, and fleas themselves carry germs and bacteria. For your pet’s sake as well as your own, you’ll no only want to get rid of fleas he has, but keep new fleas away from him, as well.

Natural flea repellents for dogs are better than chemicals. Chemicals can irritate the dog’s skin, and have the potential to cause health problems if they are ingested. The all-natural solution is to use products you probably have in your home.

Two natural repellents should be used with care. One is white vinegar; the other is lemon juice. While both of these products are completely safe for a healthy dog, they can irritate his skin if they are overused, or if he has extremely sensitive skin. Whichever product you choose, avoid using too much. The presence of either product is usually enough to kill existing fleas, and reduce the pet’s risk of acquiring more.

Dogs whose skin is very sensitive, or older dogs who may have trouble with these strong products, may be helped with baking soda. You can try it plain, or add some salt to the mixture. Plain baking soda is a soothing, all-natural product that is safe for nearly any dog. Applying it gently through his fur and on his skin should help with the flea problem. It is also less likely to cause any kind of allergic reaction than stronger products. It will pose no harm to your dogs, even if they happen to swallow some of it.

You love your special pet, so the process to get rid of fleas should be as effective as possible while not being troublesome for him. When the fleas are gone, he will be healthier and happier. Being a dog owner will also be much more enjoyable for you when fleas are gone from your home forever.
