Basic chainsaw safety

August 9th, 2010

If you’ve never used a chainsaw before, there are some things you need to know before you start work. Chainsaws are a great way to achieve a lot of work in a short time, but they can be very dangerous. It doesn’t matter whether you have a small electric chainsaw, or a big, powerful petrol chainsaw, they all meet used carefully.

The modern chainsaw was first seen in the mid 1900’s. Early chainsaws were enormous, dangerous, and slow devices, that often caused more problems than they were worth. Modern chainsaws however, provide a fast and efficient means to cut wood, and can be bought for relatively low prices almost anywhere.

One of the first things you need to do is to learn how to properly hold and use the saw, and perform basic chainsaw maintenance. Although you can read plenty of information online, or in other publications, there is really no substitute for learning first-hand from somebody who knows what they are doing. There are many accredited chainsaw instructor’s at skills institutes and forestry training centres in most major cities, and a short course is definitely worthwhile. You will learn about some of the basic safety gear and everybody should have.

Amongst other things, you will learn that one of the most important things to have is a pair of chainsaw trousers. This is a protective clothing item which can be a full pullover pant, or an apron type garment, which is composed of a tough fibres material which will protect you from wayward cuts. It is designed to jam the cutting chain of the saw should you slip, and can save you from severe injuries. Chainsaw trousers are not very expensive, and are a must have item.

Also very important are chainsaw gloves, work boots, and a helmet/ ear protection combination. All of these items can be bought from power tools safety shops, and are essential investments.
