Proper Maintenance and Upgrading Tips on Airsoft Guns

August 31st, 2010

When buying Airsoft guns, it shouldn’t be considered as another toy. They are quite sophisticated as you might think. Aside from the fact that most of the latest versions of Airsoft guns are quite expensive, their maintenance shouldn’t be taken lightly. Here are some tips to consider when upgrading or cleaning Airsoft guns.

Before you go ahead and pry open your guns, it is best to read the manual or the warranty slip. If the gun is still under warranty then it is highly recommended to bring the gun to a professional. They know better when it comes to upgrading and maintaining their own guns and, not to mention, if they accidentally ruin the gun they will definitely replace the part(s) free of charge. If it’s not under warranty, then read the manual meticulously to determine if there are things or parts of the gun that shouldn’t be touched by amateurs.

When upgrading guns, especially with airsoft rifles, the main objective of the upgrade should be determine before taking apart the whole gun. Knowing the purpose of the upgrade should always be considered in order to know which part of the gun should be disassembled. If the objective is to increase the muzzle velocity then the piston part of the mechbox should be the only thing taken apart. If the purpose is to achieve a higher rate of fire you should put your attention to the gearbox alone.

Using the proper type of screw drivers is important. Flat head and Philips screwdrivers should only be used with their own type of screws. This will prevent damage to the screws that may give unexpected troubles. The mechbox has a specific type of screw that’s called a Torx screw. This type of screw has a slot that has a 6-pointed star. This requires a Torx screwdriver for different sized screws. You’ll also encounter an Allen screw that has a hexagonal slot that needs an Allen wrench. These types of screw drivers are available on different Airsoft accessories and guns stores.

When disassembling, it is best to place mechbox or the whole gun on a white cloth. This cloth will keep screws from bouncing of the surface you’re working on and eventually get lost. There are tiny parts inside the gun that are quite vital to the effectiveness of the whole gun. By placing them on the cloth, it won’t have the chance to roll around. If possible, use a piece of magnet when you can attach metal screws or other tiny metal pieces from the gun.
