Tennis Tetherball – a new twist on an old classic
For kids, summertime is their favorite time of year. School is out of session and they are home and have the freedom to play.During the school year, tetherball is played on the playground at schools everywhere. Come summertime, kids need to get outside and have their tetherball addiction satisfied.
Kids, especially boys, love to hit things. The new game of Tennis Tetherball combines paddles with a smaller tetherball about the size of a tennis ball. Another difference from regular tetherball is that a tennis tetherball set will have a screw that the tetherball rope travels on. The addition of the screw allows the ball to stay a constant radius away from the pole versus in standard tetherball where the rope gets shorter as it wraps around the pole.
However, even though there is the screw on the pole, the object of Tennis Tetherball is the same – to hit the ball past your opponent more times than they hit it past you. Instead of wrapping around the pole, the rope travels up or down the screw and the winner reaches the end of the screw.
One thing that is important with respect to tennis tetherball versus regular tetherball is safety. The ball travels at much higher speeds and like raquetball, can hit one in the eyes so proper eye protection is a must. Raquetball protective glasses are ideal protection. Another safety tip is to use a safety strap with the paddles so that even if the paddle slips out of your hand it doesn’t go flying off and injure anyone.
If you’ve never heard of Tennis Tetherball, it’s possible that you may have heard of it by another name as the sport has been called many things – tennis tetherball, paddle tetherball, tether tennis, totem (pole) tennis, zimm zamm, and swingball. The newest sets you will find in stores go by the name swingball and will give you and your family tons of fun and enjoyment.
