Walk, Run or Jump with the New Balance 991 Running Shoe

July 28th, 2010

One of the most popular running shoes from the Boston based New Balance family is the New Balance 991. The 991s are designed for comfort and durability rather than just look. They are made from leather, mesh and suede to form the perfect fabric trio for comfort and durability.

New Balance began as the New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc., in 1906 and began making arch support systems for shoes. They specialized in support systems until 1960 when they manufactured their first running shoe. The “Trackster”, New Balance’s first running shoe, sported a ripple sole rather than smooth. The idea was to give the runner better traction and allow the foot to hold the road better. College running teams and the local YMCA’s adopted the “Trackster” as their unofficial running shoe, giving New Balance much needed publicity for their running shoe.

The New Balance running shoe took off in popularity in 1972 when Jim Davis bought the company on Boston Marathon Day. Boston was a hot bed of running at the time and Davis took full advantage of that and the Boston Marathon to increase advertising of what was at the time, America’s favorite running shoe. Davis committed to expanding the New Balance sales base while maintaining quality, customer service and individual preferences that had become the corner stone of his new company.

New Balance offers this running shoe that is a perfect balance of comfort, durability and foot support. The New Balance 991 has built in ankle support to minimize injuries in the event the runner twist their ankle. The 991s are a favorite not only for running but for any activity a running or athletic shoe is warranted. The New Balance 991 mens is a great shoe but the 991 is for women also.

Consumers give the New Balance 991 “two feet up” for comfort, durability and foot and ankle support. Also because it’s a legacy shoe, the price is usually lower than shoes that are similar from other companies.
