Epoxy Garage Floor Paint Review

October 13th, 2010

If you own a home and you’re a guy (and you’re married) at some point you are going to come to a startling realization – your wife hates the garage. That is automatically going to make it a place you want to spend some time. We all love our wives, but a little alone time is always nice. Throw into the mix a nice car and it’s only a matter of time before you are thinking about ways to upgrade your garage floor.

You will probably take a look at those garage floor tiles that you can put down or think about carpet or something else lame, and then you’ll stumble upon epoxy garage floor paint and you’ll know you’re where you’re supposed to be. Epoxy garage floor paint is great for a couple or reasons – first, it’s durable; and second, it looks amazing (think granite on your garage floor).

But which product to use? That is the question.

I’ll be the first to tell you, I haven’t used every epoxy garage floor paint out there. But I’ve used a couple. And I have my favorites. And I’m going to tell you a little bit about them today.

No matter what product you choose, and I shouldn’t have to tell you this, if you go cheap, you’re going to get what you pay for. If you want to try the Home Depot product on the floor of your garage, by all means go ahead and do it. But don’t be surprised if you’re less than thrilled with the result.

For my money, there are two products I’d recommend – Behr and Quickrete. They are pretty similar in price and performance, and you really can’t go wrong with either one. If you’re doing this for the first time, get a little bit more than you think you’ll need, because you’re going to need it.

In the end, if you are going to be putting in an epoxy garage floor, consider Behr or Quickrete. They are your best bets and will give you the best results.

When you have water rushing from your ceiling like Niagara Falls the first thing that comes to mind is the fact you need a plumber. No matter what part of the world you live in there is never a shortage of plumbers. However there is a shortage of good plumbers. In this article you will discover a few tips you can use that will guarantee you find the best plumber possible to repair your plumbing without breaking the bank.

One important tip that every homeowner should know, is exactly where the water shut off valve is located. If this is something you do not know it is highly recommended that you go right now and locate your main water shut off valve. This tip alone can save you thousands of dollars in water damage.

One of the best means of finding a qualified plumber is by word of mouth. Ask family, friends, and coworkers if they can recommend a decent plumber to you. A good plumber very rarely has to advertise, once the word is out about his or her good work and affordable pricing they are normally in demand. You can also look into review sites like Plumbing Atlanta, where you can find unbiased reviews of local plumbing companies.

When contacting any plumber the first question you should ask is if they are insured. Any good plumber would not be offended by you asking this question. If the individual that you are speaking with seems to be giving you have a beat around the bush answer, consider that to be a red flag and move on. It is also a good idea to ask if they were apprentice trained. With all the new courses popping up that promise that anyone can become a plumber in six weeks it is better to use someone that has at least been trained under a skilled plumber for at least a year.

Find out if the plumber that you are interviewing offers any sort of guarantee. In most cases those plumbers who take pride in their work will guarantee their labor. Simply by following the advise in this article you will save money.

Stairs Made Easy For Both Your Home & Office

August 8th, 2010

Getting up a set of stairs in the United States can be quite a troublesome affair. From the constant delays with the raw wood getting delivered to the construction site to your carpenter falling sick in the middle of the build setting your schedule back by a couple of days at the least. Add to the mix the large number of regulations and rules that every State has imposed on getting your stairs up, it almost seems worth not building a second floor! Even though the specifications that every city has laid down differs from the other, it is best to hire a contractor who is familiar with all of them.

WIth the regulation problem solved, you still have the other issues I mentioned left behind to solve. The easiest and cheapest way to make those problems go away that I have found would be ordering a set of prefabricated stairs from a local supplier who would make sure that they conform to your local building codes. What you do once you get your prefabricated stairs is have your contractor install it instead of having the company that made the prefab stairs work on it as it works out a lot cheaper having existing labour work on the installation than having people come over and do them over.

Prefabricated stairs are sets of steps that are made at a factory in your city and then shipped out to your construction site to be installed by your construction crew. This process, while complicated may sound like it would take a lot more time than having someone just build it for you on site but the truth is far from it. It takes about 20 man hours for a skilled carpenter to build a single flight of stairs. And before you think you’re gonna solve the problem by having 5 carpenters work on the stair, remember that too many cooks spoil the broth, like my granny used to say.

Phoenix Remodeling: How To Create Effective Lighting In Your Home

July 19th, 2010

Lighting has long been one of the most misunderstood home improvement projects. Many homeowners do not know how to create effective lighting in their homes and often under-light many rooms. To prevent this and have rooms that seem to come alive, Phoenix remodeling authorities suggest that you build levels of lighting. All this means is that you should use various sources of lighting in each room, instead of the standard one or two fixture formula. Good lighting can make a room comfortable and inviting. It can also add a gorgeous sense of drama to certain spaces. To get started, try using a combination of these great lighting ideas.

Living Room Lighting

  • Sconces add character and elegance to rooms. They are soft accent lights that can be used to highlight other objects or even just the texture of the wall. They are also decorative pieces in and of themselves.
  • You can create a gallery-like space by using picture lights above your fabulous wall art.
  • Uplight cans have many uses, but one really good use for them is to accentuate plant life. Place the cans behind your plants to highlight the stunning foliage and flower forms on your plants.
  • To really make your stone or brick fireplace a true centerpiece, use recessed downlights on the mantel or ceiling so that the light cascades across the fireplace. This will highlight the texture of the brick or stone.
  • To keep your hallway and stairway from looking like scary dark tunnels leading out of your living room, use decorative pendant lights to adorn them. This has functional value and looks terrific.

Lighting Ideas For Kitchens

After investing in things like extensive Phoenix kitchen remodeling projects, some homeowners can’t figure out why their kitchens still do not “pop.” Usually, this is because of poor lighting. Luckily, compared to some other rooms, kitchens are easy to accent with light.

  • Natural light is really important in kitchens. If you are planning on doing any Phoenix remodeling projects, skylights and high windows are a wonderful idea. They not only let in lots of beautiful, natural light, but they can also enhance a home’s architectural beauty.
  • Interior-lit cabinets are a hot Phoenix kitchen remodeling idea. They are especially beautiful when used with frosted or colored glass cabinet doors.
  • To increase the functionality and safety of your kitchen, you need good lighting near preparation areas. Adding task lights above prep areas and above the sink area will add some much needed light.
  • You can create a really stylish kitchen by using modern pendant lights. They look amazing above kitchen islands.

In addition to these lighting options, track lighting and recessed lighting are also really popular choices. Homeowners use them in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, and anywhere else that might need a modern or contemporary touch.

Balancing Act
Balancing all of your various lighting sources is the last thing you will need to do to make sure that you create effective lighting in your home. Since you will have a number of lights in one room, you must make sure that each is serving a proper function. In general, you will be balancing hard and soft lighting. Use soft lights for your overall lighting to create a comfortable ambiance, and use hard lights to accent objects, textures, and other forms. Using these simple lighting ideas will make your rooms luminous.

If you are looking to do some improvements in your house but you do not really know where to start, here are a few good ideas that can get you started in improving your property. While these are only a few ideas, you should look at what needs to get done and prioritize. See what needs to get done first and then put your available resources into that project, and when it is done, move on to the next.

One good tip to keep in mind when you are doing home improvement projects is to never leave a job half done. Unfinished jobs can haunt you like ghosts, and eventually the money you spent starting the job will be lost as you have to do it from scratch again. The ideas below have to do with making improvements to the garage to keep it looking tidy, clean, and in good repair.

1. Repair cracks in the garage floor. If you have seen any cracks in the floor of your garage it is very important to fix them as soon as possible. With the continual weight of your car and storage, the crack or dent in the flooring could spread and damage the material below. If the damage goes that far, you will have to hire workmen to replace the materials underneath and that will probably cost more than a pretty penny. So why not catch the problem when it is still small? And if you’re working with the cement flooring already, consider adding some solid shelving or other structural improvements with anchor bolts for concrete.

2. Coat the garage floor. Putting a protective covering on your garage flooring is also a good ideas for several reasons. First, by putting a protective covering on your garage floor you protect the floor from stains caused by leaking oil or gasoline from your car or cans you keep there. Second, it is easier to sweep and keep dust free when you have a layer of protective covering over the concrete.

This post from Jack at Concrete Anchor Bolts is just one of many great tips for DIY work around concrete.
