Using Long Tail Key Phrases

Using keywords in Internet marketing and search engine optimization is a given these days. Search engines use keywords to figure out what websites should show up in the search engine’s results when a user types in those exact or similar key phrases. While keywords are not the only factor in determining where a  website should show up in the results, it is one of the most important factors. For example, if a website sells DVD movies, it would not show up in the results if “DVD” and “movies” were not used as keywords on the website.

The problem with keywords however is that several websites are trying to use the same ones, especially when it comes to popular topics such as weight loss, exercising and making money, to name a few. When a website is about a topic matter that is very popular with Internet users, it can at times be hard to get a website ranked well due to the competition in that particular market. When there is a lot of competition and everyone is trying to use the same two or three words, only a couple websites that have been around for several years have a chance of making it to the top.

Luckily, key phrases that the keywords make up are not required to only be two or three words long. While it is not good for website marketing and SEO to use really long key phrases, making the phrase four to six words long can actually be helpful when it comes to getting a website listed high up in the search engine results. Using long tail key phrases specifically targets a certain product or idea in many instances and this means that websites are able to show up in the results higher up in the results since the competition is not as extreme.

It is true that the number of people seeing a website may be less if a site is using long tail key phrases rather than short phrases, but the people who find the site in the search results will be more interested in what the website has to offer since they searched for that exact phrase. Chances are, if a person took the extra time to enter a few more words into the search box, they are searching for a very specific product, piece of information or idea, which you will be marketing.

Is Online Marketing a Money Maker of the Past?

July 9th, 2010

Five years ago, online marketing was hopping and it seemed like every person I knew was trying to get in on making money online. Right around the time the housing market and the rest of the economy started to tank though, online marketing took a nose dive and everyone seemed to blame it on the recession. People who were once making millions in affiliate marketing or those who were making ends meet off of their advertising revenue from their website, were left without an income source.

Even though most will blame the end of online marketing as we once knew it on the recession, there are actually a few other reasons why this lucrative business suddenly became not so lucrative anymore. Truth is, making money on the Internet with online marketing is not a thing of the past and people can still bring in rather decent incomes from it, but they need to sweep the ways of the past under the rug.

The key to being a successful online marketer depends on being able to think outside of the usual box and tapping into new ideas. One of the new ideas that Internet marketers can utilize is using niche marketing to hone in on their target audience. Marketers cannot simply put an ad out there and market to the masses online anymore. Marketing efforts should be targeted to the people who are the most likely to buy a product or use a service that the marketer is promoting. When only marketing to a target audience, companies are also saving money because only the people that are looking for their products or services are seeing the information that is being marketed.

Besides niche marketing, using a new search engine for PPC advertisement is also a good idea. Big search engines are flooded with PPC ads and its hard to get low cost ads on the first page of the search results in a lot of niche areas. Using a new search engine provides marketers with a lower amount of competition, which is going to be an advantage. Some will say that this is not a good idea because not as many people use smaller search engines, however there is something to consider. There is less of a chance of PPC ads being seen on the larger search engines, especially when marketers are targeting a popular niche. If the ads are showing up first page for popular niches, the marketer is more than likely paying several dollars per click for those ads. Newer search engines might have fewer users, but the ads are cheaper and there is a lot better of a chance of the pay per click ads being seen on the first page of the results.

As with any other career or field, methods are always changing and online marketing is no different. Keeping on top of the current marketing trends, using new search engines and marketing to a targeted niche audience are just a few ways that you can up your marketing game.
