Learning How to Speak Japanese Can Start With a Japanese Eraser

It’s pretty difficult to start learning a language, let alone one that doesn’t have a phonetic alphabet.  There are so many different places to start that it can be overwhelming.  But the same things hold true when starting to learn Japanese and the best thing to do is just get started as soon as possible.  You can piece one word together with its meaning and slowly but surely you’ll amass a vocabulary that can produce sentences.  Before you know it these sentences will become paragraphs and you’ll be on your way to enjoying the language.

Keep in mind with each step how far you have come.  Remember that there was a time you knew nothing.  Once you reach a twenty word vocabulary, remember that you once knew zero.  When you reach a thousand words, realize that at one point you only knew one hundred.  To find the first step, the place where you can get started, just pick a topic that interests you and dive in head first.  This can be something as simple as looking at the packaging of the world of Japanese erasers come in and pulling vocabulary words off of them.

The word for Japanese eraser in Japanese is actually two words glued together.  It can be roughly translated to mean gum that erasers or deletes.  Letting yourself get excited about this type of fact is the perfect way to get started and finding something that interests you will be a good way to let the language hold your interest as you progress.  The more interesting things get, the longer you’ll be able to stick with it and better the information will stick the first time.  In time the language will be cohesive enough in your brain that each piece will fit, and stick like the piece of a puzzle.  Each element will have enough relation to the rest of the whole that it will take much less work to remember.
