Ways to Make Wall Murals

I just love wall murals! It’s like a collage of different moods, feelings or beliefs of the creator. A wall mural can convey a lot of messages – subliminal or the obvious.

There are traditional techniques of making a wall mural. Tempera, tile or oil paintings are just a few. However with the advancement of technology in the previous years, many time and cost effective alternatives replaced the traditional manual painting techniques. Vinyl decal stickers (graphics or pictures printed on special paper) are popular alternatives being used widely for home décor purposes. I have seen a lot of beautiful and non-traditional houses with vinyl stickers. Oh how I wish my walls are like theirs! Some of the major shops all over the world also use vinyl stickers to put ‘character’ to the store and attract more customers. It’s cheaper and it saves half of the time compared to hand painting. In addition to graphics or photos, vinyl wall quotes are also very stylish and they never fail to intrigue the reader. Take for instance, Starbucks. Their vinyl wall quotes are educating, if not, entertaining. They never fail to take away my boredom while sipping my latte.

Aside from being cost and time effective, another advantage of vinyl stickers is that you can always remove them when you want to change your design. Hence if you are just renting a room and you’re not allowed to make permanent changes to the walls, vinyl sticker is the answer. Artistically done decal stickers can also create illusions, like space. Vinyl stickers can make a room look larger and brighter, depending on the decal design.

In making a wall mural, there are three (3) important points to consider. First, you have to consider your purpose. Do you want to convey a message or do you just want to cover a flaw on the wall? Second, you have to choose decal designs that will suit your lifestyle. If your work requires you to concentrate while beating a deadline, then you might not want to stick graffiti or complex art designs on your walls. Inspirational quotes or designs that will create an illusion of peace and tranquility are the ones for you. Lastly, in decorating I believe that “less is more”. Focus on one theme, overdoing it will definitely ruin the effect.
