Shopping for a Professional Saxophone

When it comes to purchasing a professional grade saxophone there are number of things to consider. Some horns are bettered suited for classical while others are much more noted as great jazz instruments. In these economic times one must also consider cost and a saxophone requires a significant financial investment. Sopranos can range up to $4000.00, altos and tenors up to $6000.00, and baritones top at $7000.00. Don’t assume a used horn will cost less. Vintage saxophones often cost a good deal more.

So which manufacturer is best?

Selmer – There can be no serious discussion of professional saxophones without considering Selmer. The Mark VI and VII are most often considered the best to be had. A serious buyer needs to be aware, however, that brand doesn’t guarantee consistency of quality. Music stores are quite proud of this series and they are often over-priced for the quality of sound. This doesn’t mean Selmer doesn’t still set the curve because it does. It does mean, testing out each individual horn before your purchase is essential.

Yamaha – Yamaha has a history of poor construction and faulty pads but the new Custom series is definitely in the running for a serious musician. One advantage to the Yamaha is consistency within models – of real value when you have to replace one.

Keilwerth – This brand has given Selmer a good run for its money for a while and the Armstrong Professional model is excellent. Do be aware that, like the Selmer, consistency is an issue because they are handmade.

Yanagisawa – Like the Yamaha these had problems in the past but the Siversonic models are quite good and quite pricey.

While Selmer is still a front runner all of these others are worth one’s time when shopping around. Remember to take into account your personal needs, the type of music you play most often, and the availability of a replacement should your lose the horn you’ve fallen in love with. Take a look at some of these saxophones at music instruments or Yamaha saxophones.
